SCHOLARSHIPS

 

The Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel (GASPP)/GA TRiO is pleased to announce the 2019 Scholarship Competition in the following categories:

Academic 

Each program is eligible to submit two (2) applications (six will be awarded).

Need Based

Each program is eligible to submit one (1) application (two will be awarded).

Doreatha S. Tyson

 Each program is eligible to submit  one (1) application (one will be awarded).

This year GASPP/ GA TRiO will utilize a single application for ALL scholarships. A sample of the application and checklist can be found below. TRIO Staff are expected to complete the application for these awards, please read the directions carefully to ensure all information is provided when the application is submitted.

Submission DEADLINE is March 1, 2019 by 11:59 PM (EST)

Before submitting this scholarship application, ensure that everything is submitted correctly and accurately.   Please Note: There is NOT a SAVE and Come Back later feature.  Once you start, you MUST finish.

**Once an application has been submitted it cannot be amended.  You must submit another application to submit in its place, if you would like to ammend an application.  PLEASE NOTE - if multiple scholarships of the same type are submitted for the same student, only the most recent  application will be accepted.**

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
 

The Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel (GASPP)/GA TRiO  is pleased to announce the 2019 Academic Scholarship Competition. TRiO participants are invited to compete for six (6) scholarship awards in the amount of $700.00 each. Each program is eligible to submit two (2) applications.

General Requirements for Academic Scholarship Awards, Each applicant MUST:

1. Have participated in one of the federally funded TRiO program.

 

2. Complete in its entirety and Submit this official application by March 1, 2019  at 11:59 PM. (EST). Applications received after March 1st will not be considered.

3. Be a high school senior with a 2.8 or higher cumulative grade point average (Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search), OR be a freshman, sophomore or junior in college with a 2.5 or higher grade point average. College seniors may apply only if they are planning to enroll in graduate school in the ensuing fall term. 

 

4. Be sponsored/recommended by a staff member of the project in which the applicant participates. Please note: The staff member MUST be a current financial member of GASPP/GA TRiO.

 

5. Upload an unofficial transcript which lists all courses taken through the first semester of 2019 or the applicant must submit verification of having obtained a GED.

 

6. Upload two (2) letters of recommendation on official letterhead. One letter MUST be from the sponsoring TRiO staff member. The other MUST come from a school official (teacher, counselor, principal/president, dean etc…). 

In order to receive the scholarship, sponsors must verify students’ enrollment in a post-secondary institution in September 13, 2019.  Award checks will be mailed by October 4, 2019 and made payable to the student.  The submission deadline for all materials is March 1st.  Only online applications will be accepted. An e-mail confirmation will be sent for all completed applications on or before the deadline.

 

Winners will be announced at the 2019 Tri-State Conference.

 

NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel (GASPP)/GA TRiO is pleased to announce the 2019 Need-Based Scholarship competition.  TRiO participants are invited to compete for two (2) scholarship awards of $700.00 each.  These awards may be used to help defray post secondary education cost during the 2019-2020 school year.  Sponsors of applicants MUST be current GASPP/GA TRiO  financial members.  Each program is eligible to submit ONE application per project.

 

Please Note:

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered and will not be returned.

  • Institutions/agencies that submit more applications than stated above from the same program will be disqualified.       

 

General Requirements for Need Based Scholarship Award Applicants, Each applicant MUST:

1. Have participated in one of the federally funded TRiO program.

3.Submit proof of Financial Need (each applicant MUST submit verification of income or family income)

4. Be sponsored/recommended by a staff member of the project in which the applicant participates. Please note: The staff member MUST be a current financial member of GASPP.

5. Upload an unofficial transcript which lists all courses taken through the first semester of 2019, or the applicant must submit verification of having obtained a GED.

  • Application Face Sheet

  • Essay (content, grammar, format, etc

  • Two (2) Recommendation letters

  • Financial Need (Each applicant MUST submit verification of income or family income)

DOREATHA S. TYSON SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel (GASPP)/GA TRiO is pleased to announce the Doreatha S. Tyson Scholarship competition.  A total of one (1) scholarship award of $1000.00 each will be awarded.  These awards may be used to help defray postsecondary education cost during the upcoming Academic year.  Sponsors of applicants MUST be current GASPP financial members.  Each program is eligible to submit ONE application per project. 

 

Mrs. Doreatha Tyson was born on July 25, 1944 in Savannah, GA. She was blessed with loving and caring parents who instilled having faith in God; and encouraged strength and determination. This basis of living and faith enabled Mrs. Doreatha to gravitate toward education as a profession. She gave over 40 years of her life helping children with promise, who needed a kind word, a smiling face and direction. Because she was not blessed with children, Mrs. Doreatha found great happiness and pleasure assisting many, many students during her tenure at Savannah State College.

 

At Savannah State College, she began her career with the Trio Talent Search Programs. She eventually became the Executive Director of the Educational Talent Search Program, and was elected President of the Southeastern Association of Education Opportunity Programs Personnel (SAEOPP). She developed a style of living, focused on giving, helping and sharing. Her personal accomplishments and achievements are numerous based on her love for children.

 

Mrs. Tyson was a devout Christian and a true believer in the power and presence of Jesus Christ. She accepted Christ as her personal savior early in life and was a faithful, active and dedicated member of the St. John Baptist Church until her death. She was extremely active, having served as a member of the Board of Trustees and Secretary of Victory Theological Seminary Incorporated and Chairperson, Needs Assessment Committee, member of the Fortress Senior Saints and former Chairperson of the Education Committee. She facilitated the development of mission statements for all church ministries. It was her vision to create the Institute of Excellence, having worked with the committee during its implementation. As a result, she received St. John’s Bridge Builder Award February 2014.

 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

Each applicant MUST:

  • Have participated in one of the federally funded TRIO program.

  • Submit all required materials by March 1, 2019 at 11:59 PM (EST). Materials received after March 1st  will not be considered.

  • Be a high school senior with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average (Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search), OR be a freshman, sophomore or junior in college with a 3.0 or higher grade point average. College seniors may apply only if they are planning to enroll in graduate school in the ensuing fall term.

  • Must have exemplified community service, civic, and/or church involvement in high school and/or college

PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

  • Upload an unofficial transcript which lists all courses taken through the first semester of 2019, or the applicant must submit verification of having obtained a GED.

  • Copy of college acceptance letter

  • A list of community, civic, and church involvement

  • Three (3) written letters of recommendation

  • 1 Personal Source (church member, community service sponsor, etc.)

  • 1 Sponsoring TRIO staff member (on official letterhead) PLEASE NOTE: The staff member MUST be a current financial member of Georgia TRIO.

    • 1 High School or College Official- on official letterhead (teacher, principal, dean, etc.)
